This guide walks teachers and school staff through setting up the Meta Quest 3 or Meta Quest 3S for classroom use.
Unboxing the Meta Quest 3(S)
When you unbox your Meta Quest 3 or 3S, make sure the following items are included:
- 1x Meta Quest 3 or 3S headset
- 2x Meta Quest Touch Plus controllers
- 1x USB-C power adapter
- 1x USB-C to USB-C cable
- 2x AA batteries
- 1x Glasses spacer
Check that you received all components.
Charging the Meta Quest 3(S) headset and controllers
To charge the headset:
- Plug the USB-C cable into the headset’s port (right side)
- Connect the other end to the adapter and a wall outlet
- The LED will turn green when fully charged
Controllers do not recharge. They run on AA batteries.
- Remove the battery tabs before first use
- Replace batteries when they run low
Creating a safe classroom space
Clear an area of approximately 2m x 2m per user. Remove any obstacles like bags or chairs to prevent accidents. You’ll set up virtual boundaries in a later step.
Powering on the Meta Quest 3(S) headset
Hold the Power button on the left side of the headset for 2 to 3 seconds to turn it on.
Controllers usually power on and pair automatically. If not, press the Menu (left) and Meta (right) buttons.
Connecting to Wi-Fi
First setup the headset via MHMS or with a consumer account. For educational purposes, use an MDM system like MHMS and even a third party MDM like ManageXR or ArborXR. This will allow you to control the headset and set a kiosk mode on a device experience or specific apps.
Then go to:
Settings → Wi-Fi
Select your network and enter the password. This will be remembered for future use. It’s recommended that a staff member handles this step.
Creating or logging into a Meta account
Meta Quest requires an account to access content.
We recommend using a shared institutional email to create a generic school account. Meta now also supports supervised or work accounts.
Adjusting fit and IPD (Interpupillary Distance)
- Use the adjustable strap to ensure a secure but comfortable fit.
- For glasses users, install the included spacer.
IPD (Interpupillary Distance):
- Quest 3: Adjustable via a dial/ wheel on the bottom right
- Quest 3S: Uses preset positions: 58mm, 63mm (default), and 68mm
Installing educational content
Educational VR apps can be downloaded from:
- The Meta Quest Store
- App Lab
- Via SideQuest or sideloading with Third-Party MDMs, which requires Developer Mode.
Pairing and using controllers
Controllers come pre-paired.
If needed, re-pair via:
Meta Horizon App → Settings → Devices → Controllers → Pair New Controller
Hold Menu + Y (left) or Meta + B (right) for 3 seconds.
Use:
- Trigger button: Select/grab
- Grip button: Hold
- Thumbstick: Navigate
Setting boundaries (Guardian System)
When turned on, the headset prompts you to define your play area.
To manually adjust:
Meta Button → Quick Settings → Settings → Environment Setup → Boundary
Draw your area using your controller.
Hygiene for multi-student use
- Use disposable face covers
- Wipe lenses with a dry microfiber cloth only
- For deeper cleaning, use isopropyl wipes (not liquid sprays)
Kid-friendly settings
Use Shared mode in MHMS or set a kiosk mode through a third party MDM like ManageXR or ArborXR.
Use Kiosk Mode to limit access to specific apps:
- Select approved apps
- Disable browser access in: Settings → Parental Controls
This guide ensures your Quest 3 or 3S is classroom-ready, safe, and structured for repeatable use across sessions. For visuals and more setup resources, contact your supplier or consult Meta’s support site.
