Apple Vision Pro: How to use and customize Immersive Environments

Apple Vision Pro doesn’t just show you apps; it transports you to different worlds. Whether you want to work on the surface of the Moon or relax by a lake in the clouds, Environments make it possible.

What are Immersive Environments?

Environments are beautiful, dynamic 3D landscapes that can replace your real-world surroundings. They aren’t just static photos; they feature moving elements like rippling water, shifting clouds, and ambient spatial audio that reacts to your head movements.

  • Focus: Use them to hide a cluttered room and stay focused on work.
  • Cinema: Use them to turn your movie-watching into a private theater experience.

How to enter and adjust immersion levels

  1. Open the Home View: Press the Digital Crown once.
  2. Select Environments: Look at the “Mountains” icon and tap your fingers.
  3. Choose a Location: Pick a scene like Mount Hood, Joshua Tree, or Haleakalā.
  4. The Magic Dial: Rotate the Digital Crown clockwise to slowly “dial in” the environment. You can go from a small window of scenery to a 360-degree world that completely hides your room.

Customizing your Environment settings

You can control how these worlds look and sound to better suit your mood:

  • Light vs. Dark: In the Environments menu, you can select “Light” (Daytime), “Dark” (Nighttime), or “Automatic” (matches your actual time of day).
  • Ambient Volume: Each world has its own soundscape. If it’s too loud or quiet, go to Settings > Sound > Ambient Sounds to adjust the balance.
  • Internal Link: If you find the environment makes text hard to read, see our guide on to increase contrast.

Troubleshooting: Safety and volume issues

  • Breakthrough: If someone walks into your room or talks to you while you are fully immersed, visionOS will “break” the environment to show you their person—this is a built-in safety feature called Breakthrough.
  • Tracking Warning: If the environment disappears and shows your room unexpectedly, ensure you are in a well-lit area. See for more details.
