Apple Vision Pro: Eyes & Hands: The Art of Natural Navigation

Apple Vision Pro replaces traditional controllers with the most intuitive tools you have: your gaze and your gestures. The Eyes & Hands settings allow you to fine-tune how the device tracks your movements for a seamless experience.

The Magic of Gaze Selection

Your eyes act as the cursor in visionOS. The system uses high-speed internal cameras and Sensors and Cameras to detect exactly where you are looking.

  • Precision: Simply looking at an icon or button highlights it instantly, powered by the low-latency processing of the R1 Chip.
  • Optic ID: This same eye-tracking hardware is used for Optic ID to keep your device secure through iris recognition.
  • Calibration: If you find that the “cursor” isn’t landing exactly where you look, you can re-run the setup to align the Micro-OLED technology displays with your pupils.

Mastering Hand Gestures

Once you’ve looked at an item, your hands perform the “click.” The downward-facing cameras track your hands even when they are resting comfortably in your lap.

  • Tap and Scroll: Pinch your thumb and index finger together to select, or flick your wrist to scroll through Immersive Environments or web pages.
  • Accessibility: In the settings menu, you can choose to track “Both Hands,” “Left Hand Only,” or “Right Hand Only” to suit your preference.
  • Input Sensitivity: These gestures are designed to be subtle, so you don’t need large arm movements to navigate visionOS.

Troubleshooting: Improving Input Accuracy

  • Lighting: Tracking works best in a well-lit room. If it’s too dark, the cameras may struggle to see your hand pinches.
  • Obstructions: Ensure your hands are visible to the cameras and not hidden under a desk or a heavy blanket.
  • Cleaning: Smudges on the front glass can blur the cameras’ view of your hands. Keep the exterior sensor area clean with an Apple Polishing Cloth.
  • Fit and Alignment: If the headset has shifted on your face, it may affect eye-tracking accuracy. Adjust your Light Seal and Cushions for a snug, centered fit.
  • Display Issues: If the UI elements appear too small to select easily, try adjusting the Display & Text Size to make targets larger.
